Our Programs

At The Unsheltered Project, every program is designed to address the mental health and emotional well-being of shelter dogs, from the moment they arrive to their journey toward adoption. Our pillars provide a comprehensive framework to reduce stress, restore confidence, and promote lasting behavioral and emotional recovery.

1. Awareness, Training & Education for Shelter Staff

We equip shelter teams with the knowledge and tools to recognize and respond to stress and trauma in dogs. Programs include:

  • Staff and volunteer training on trauma-informed handling and stress reduction

  • Strategic placement support for dogs based on behavioral needs

  • Connecting shelters with local certified behaviorists for guidance

  • Pilot programs to implement evidence-based interventions at partner shelters

2. Regulation & Coping Therapy

Focused on restoring emotional balance, this pillar uses scientifically backed tools to help dogs cope with the stress of shelter life:

  • New Arrivals Wellness & Recovery Program for recently surrendered dogs

  • Enrichment activities, puzzle feeders, and toys designed to stimulate and comfort

  • Music therapy, pheromone therapy, and calming interventions to support nervous system regulation

3. Low-Stimulus Social Therapy Events

Shelter dogs benefit from safe, structured socialization outside the kennel environment:

  • Community engagement programs to encourage gentle human interaction and confidence building

  • Sleepovers and short-term experiences to reduce anxiety and teach dogs to adapt to calm, home-like routines

4. Canine Decompression & Emotional Reset Suites

Specialized spaces designed to reduce stress and promote recovery:

  • Quiet rooms for dogs needing refuge from the sensory overload of the shelter

  • Real-life rooms that mimic home environments, providing enrichment and normalized routines

  • Funded by grants and donations to ensure accessibility for all partner shelters

5. Kennel Trauma Extraction Program

For dogs experiencing severe kennel-induced stress or behavioral deterioration, this pillar provides:

  • Assistance with emergency intervention and temporary placement for dogs at risk

  • Tailored enrichment and behavioral support to stabilize emotional health

  • Collaboration with behaviorists and trained foster networks to maximize recovery and adoption potential
