Eliminating the need for animal shelters

The Unsheltered Project exists to eliminate the need for animal shelters by addressing the root causes that force pets out of their homes. Through education, early intervention, and practical solutions, we work to keep pets safe, supported, and out of the shelter system whenever possible.

Vision: We envision a future where animal shelters are no longer necessary because communities are equipped to support responsible pet ownership, prevent unnecessary surrenders, and provide alternatives before crisis occurs.

Our goal is not to manage overflow from a broken system, but to help build one that no longer requires cages, kennels, or euthanasia — and more on prevention, support, and community-based solutions.

Core philosophy: Most animals entering shelters are not unwanted — they are victims of preventable circumstances. Housing instability, lack of education, financial hardship, behavioral challenges, limited resources, and temporary life crises push people into impossible decisions.

The Unsheltered Project focuses upstream, long before a shelter intake form is ever filled out.

Because shelters should be the last resort, not the first option.
